Welcome to the Coaching news section of the HKCA web-site. In this area you will find all the information that you will need regarding the different types of coaching that is available for you or for your children.
The winter Coaching Programme is designed to keep the Junior Representative Cricketers, who have been chosen for the 2006/2007 season, involved in Cricket during the winter months.
The sessions focus on the continued development of skills that are needed as the players progress from junior to senior Cricket. They are also a way for the Junior teams to get to know the players within their squads and to begin to build some team unity before the start of the Cricket season.
Trials for the Junior Teams will be held in March 2006 for the following season. The practice schedule for the winter of 2006 is posted below.
The Primary Coaching Programme is run by two HKCA qualified Coaches. Sean Korte, a Level 2 Cricket Coach and Royden Trask, a level 1 coach. The programme is designed for Primary students and the focus is put on teaching them the basics of the game.
Sean and Royden work with both beginner students as well as with the Milo Cup teams from some of the Full Primary schools. The programme is held over 6 weeks for 1 hour per term. The idea is that the same group of students work with the coach for the term, gradually developing the basic skills of the game. We are also looking to increase the interest of Schools for playing matches against other schools in the area.
The Schools that will take part in the coaching programme in both Term 4 of 2006 and Term 1 of 2007will be confirmed shortly.
If you would like more information on how your School can take part in the Primary Coaching Programme then please do not hesitate to contact us or ring Sean Korte - 027 231 1633.
MILO Have-A-Go
The MILO Have-A-Go programme will again be a predominant fixture in Horowhenua and Kapiti this season. The purpose of Have-A-Go cricket is to introduce young children (Age 6-8) to cricket by way of a skill based 10-12 week programme. Each session includes a series of activities, drills and games and each participant receives an exciting NZ Cricket giveaway after each lesson. The key to this programme is the parent support required in order for a centre to be set up. Parents are trained on the skills along with the children and can then take part in the centre by way of managing and coordinating each session.
This season HKCA will be looking to set up another 7 centres across the region with 3 in the South (Paekakariki, Paraparaumu and Waikanae) and 4 in the North (3 in Levin and 1 in Foxton). With the creation of these centres around 24 schools will be visited and close to 2000 young children will be introduced to the game of cricket for the first time. Look out for notices in your schools newsletters and local newspapers about the closest centre starting near you, and watch this space on the website.
MILO KiwiCricket
This season a new focus is being put on the KiwiCricket programme/game in both the Horowhenua and Kapiti Districts. KiwiCricket is a skill and game based programs where team of 8-10 train and play against each other, with the focus still on skill development. Again KiwiCricket comes with a MILO NZ Cricket giveaway after each session.
The Waikanae and Paraparaumu clubs will run their competition again, with a focus on skills development coaching through their teams. Also, a separate centre/team is hoped to be created at Paekakariki with the option of playing either amongst themselves or combining in with the Kapiti Clubs. In the North, I will be looking to create 4 KiwiCricket centres around the existing Have-A-Go centres. The idea is the KiwiCricket programme is run for 6 weeks, where players practice in their own centres for 5 of those weeks, following that on the 6th week HKCA will run a festival day, or Super 8s competition combining all the players together for a day.
New Zealand Skills Challenge
This year NZ Cricket has introduced an exciting new Cricket Skills Challenge to fit into the Year 7 and 8 curriculums. The program is designed to train teachers some specifics of coaching cricket based skills and outlines a series of challenges each participant has time to master over a given period of class time. At the end of the program each participant is tested over 5 skills and is awarded a level; Gold, Silver or Bronze. The program is fully resourced and is also a great tool for Teachers Professional Development.
Girls Cricket
We are looking for ways to introduce Intermediate/Secondary aged girls to playing the modified game called QuikHit. I will be working through the various schools to build interest around the game and any coaching assistance needed to set it up. It is a great concept and has a lot of potential. If you are keen to see this start in your local school or club please contact me for more information.
